2024 TBR Update | Multiple DNFs and a Reading Break
I did a video before the new year about my plan to be more intentional with my TBR in 2024. I kept getting excited about shiny new things and my reading life was really disjointed. It was too heavy in one genre when I had a long list of books to read to help me as an author, and a mom, and for my health, that just weren’t finding their way to the top of the pile.
The real question is if this is working and if I have stuck to this plan at all…
I’m a planner, I like to plan, and I had a beautiful plan for my 2024 reading with five categories:
Craft & Author Business
Novel Research
Parenting
Health
Fun
Am I sticking to it?
I have been. I have had rounds where I read one book from each category before I can move to the next. That way I would have a balance and not just read through my fun pile and leave all the non-fiction for the end.
How many days into the year did I deviate (Jan 4)
I did deviate and I picked up a book that would have made my round 2 for the fun category. It was a fabulous book and I’m glad I mixed up my list because it was just sitting there at the library, being all awesome and in need of a good home for a few weeks.
Biggest Lesson so Far
I am susceptible to marketing copy as much as the next person. Especially for the non-fiction titles on my list. They had great titles, and great hooks, and I have had to DNF two books so far and had to muddle through a third. The marketing got me and life is too short to read a book you aren’t loving. So I’m glad I gave these books a try because I had been excited about them. But I think this speaks to an underlying issue in how non-fiction books are produced via traditional publishing. Which is the author crafts a pitch, sells the book on the idea, and then writes it. And the end product maybe doesn’t always live up to the pitch. I’ve read great non-fiction, but I’ve also read some … rough non-fiction. And those books were DNFed.

Non-Fiction: The Creative Act by Rick Ruben.
Fiction: I haven’t had a bad fiction experience yet this year.

Room to add more for the year?
Yes, I’m planning to revamp and revise and question the non-fiction books on my list to see if some need to be pruned early to make way for new ones.
