LastPass is a password manager trusted by over 20 million people. Today marks the start of a big change to the feature list which has long differentiated it amongst competitors.
Password managers are an essential part of keeping your digital life secure in the modern age. With so much of our digital lives requiring a username and password, it is essential for use to ensure that we use strong, unique passwords in order to prevent hackers from accessing our data.
Generally, a hacker has two ways they can access your data. They either guess your password based on simple, frequently used passwords or based on available data about you; or, they get your password from a data breach. The best way to prevent hackers from guessing your password is by ensuring that you utilize a strong password with various letters, numbers, and special characters. The best way to prevent a hacker from utilizing a data breach to access your account is to ensure that all passwords are unique.
When all of your passwords meet both criteria and are unique and strong, they become very difficult to remember. As such, a password manager allows you to store all of your passwords under a single, master password. This way, you can focus on remembering one, strong password instead of all of them.
LastPass is a great service to handle password management in this way, but their recent acquisition by a private equity firm has resulted in changes to the free version of their service. Most notably, LastPass free users must now decide whether to access their account on computers (desktop computers, laptop computers, etc.) or mobile (cell phone, tablet, etc.). Whereas both were previously included under the free offerings, now a user must pay for the premium offering in order to enjoy this simple benefit. Should you stick around or jump ship?
