Nosebleed is medically known as Epistaxis.

Epistaxis is can be defined as an acute oozing of blood from the nostrils, nasal cavity or nasopharynx. It is one of the most common complaints to the ED.

With severe epistaxis or nosebleed, nasal packing is needed to stop the nosebleeds.

A small nasal packing is used for the anterior nose bleeds where as a long nasal packing is used for the severe or deep inside bleeding.

Most nasal packages contain an inflatable balloon with a syringe.

The inflatable balloon is first dipped in water to moisturize it.

Now, nasal packing is slowly inserted into the nose. Once inserted into the nose, balloon is inflated with the syringe apparatus given with nasal package.

Sufficient amount of air is added into the balloon so that the pressure exerted by the balloon exceeds the pressure of bleeding vessel of the nose.

This nasal packing is kept in place inside the nose anywhere from 1 to 5 days as per the medical condition.

Once the nosebleed stops, condition improves and the nasal packing is ready to be removed; the nasal packing is deflated with the syringe and then removed slowly and diligently.
