On October 28, 2023, a partial lunar eclipse happened and was theoretically well visible in Germany. However, the natural scenery was contradicted by cloudy skies in large parts of the country. Unfortunately, which was also the case in Berlin. While the later night sky gave a full view of the full moon, I had to wait a long time in the evening for the moon to repeatedly appear behind the cloud cover. From 8 p.m. the moon entered the Earth's penumbra, at 9:35 p.m. it moved into the umbra, and reached maximum partial shading from around 10:14 p.m. From around 22:53 the moon emerged from the umbra of the moon, and at around 0:28 it also left the penumbra. Between about 10:15 and 10:30 p.m. I repeatedly had the opportunity to film and photograph the moon, with short interruptions. However, veils of clouds were always visible in the recordings, which gave the video footage in particular an interesting dynamic.
A lunar eclipse occurs when the full moon is in line with the Earth and the sun, in the order sun, earth, moon. The moon first enters the Earth's penumbra, which has a diffuse and ring-formed shape and then the inner and circular umbra. If the moon only partially enters the umbra, as happened on October 28, 2023, there is a partial lunar eclipse. In his paper, the author A. Mallama (2022) deals with model based aspects of lunar eclipse phenomena. The models used are based on the geometry of celestial bodies and the physics of atmospheric phenomena. They allow for example a long-term prediction of color and dimming of lunar eclipses until 2050. A scientific section about lunar phases and eclipses published on the NASA science website explains why we always see the same side of the moon, and what distinguishes the half moon from the full moon. The effects of the Moon's orbit around the Earth and the Earth's orbit around the Sun are explained and even described what a lunar eclipse would look like when viewed from the Moon. It is not explained whether it would also be possible to see an earth's eclipse from the moon. In this context, one has to remember the size relationships between moon and earth. And one needs to come to the conclusion that the umbra of the moon can only be seen from the moon's perspective as a dark spot on the earth. The same constellation, i.e. sun, moon and earth, creates a solar eclipse when viewed from earth.
