At the 1945 UK General Election Clement Attlee's Labour Party would be swept to power with the party's first majority in the House of Commons - a majority of 145 seats. The result was unexpected as the uncharasmatic Attlee defeated Winston Churchill, whose leadership during WW2 was lauded. Why did Attlee win against the expectation of most political commentators? I argue, firstly, that they shouldn't have been surprised as the polls has Labour ahead and, secondly, that the Labour Party's focus on winning the peace was critical to victory.
