Tuol Sleng Genocide Museum used to be a high school before being converted to a prison by the Khmer rouge during their regime and genocide of millions of people. Soldiers, government officials, academics, doctors, teachers, lawyers, and even party members who disagreed with the system were brought to S21 for torture and their eventual murder . Burial ground was limited at the prison, so prisoners were shipped out to the Choeung Ek extermination centre, 21 kms out of town known as "The Killing Fields". Anywhere between 1.5 million - 3 million people were murdered between 1975 and 1979.
