To treat cancer most effectively, scientists need to understand not only the tumor itself, but also the environment around it. Riley Larkin, a graduate student in the Intramural Research Program at the National Institutes of Health, takes pictures of the immune cells surrounding tumors in the hopes that his findings will lead to ways to inhibit the cells that protect tumors and activate the ones that combat cancer.
