Many babies are born with birth defects that affect parts of their faces. These abnormalities often result from problems with the formation of bone that occur while they grow in the womb. Jeremie Oliver Piña, a graduate student in the Intramural Research Program at the National Institutes of Health, is investigating how bone forms in a developing fetus in order to identify new targets for treatments that will prevent or correct those problems.
