Boxing Hall of Famer turned renowned boxing promoter Oscar de la Hoya joined Brown Bag Mornings ahead of “King” Ryan Garcia’s super fight against Gervonta “Tank” Davis to discuss fight week festivities, his upcoming documentary, his business relationship with former opponent Bernard “B-Hop” Hopkins and navigating criticism as a public figure.

De la Hoya talked about his trust on Garcia’s skill and ability at the final press conference for the megafight, admitting his girlfriend helped him write the passionate speech questioning Davis’ confidence in defeating Garcia at his best. The East Los Angeles Native discussed similarities between Garcia and his own struggles with mental health and dealing with their Mexican-American identity as good-looking boxers trying to appeal to hardcore Mexican fight fans.

Revealing an upcoming biographical documentary premiering in June, De la Hoya was brutally honest on past party life and balance with sobriety and cultural influence and how the perspective allows him to be a better promoter and influence to his stable of fighters.

The boxing legend talked about community impact, upcoming fighters in his stable to keep an eye on and his favorite Mexican food joint in East LA.

“The Golden Boy” documentary is premiering at the Tribeca film festival in June, with Mark Wahlberg and Mario Lopez serving as executive producers.
