Introduced in December 1948, the new E493A Ford Prefect owed much to its pre-WW2 E93A predecessor. Based around a similar transverse leaf-sprung ladder-frame chassis, it was powered by the same 1172cc four-cylinder side-valve engine mated to a three-speed manual transmission. Sporting a handsomely restyled four-door saloon body complete with front-wing integrated headlamps and a fresh radiator grille design, it utilised 6-volt electrics plus vacuum-operated windscreen wipers. Laid out in the traditional manner, its interior boasted a well-stocked bakelite dashboard and two-tone upholstery. Immensely popular some 192,000 were made over the course of its five-year production run (though, today survivors are comparatively scarce).

Manufactured in 1953, this Prefect was supplied new to the United Kingdom and is understood to be one of the last 200 off the production line. Finished in Cantebury Green which was usually reserved for the Zephyr/Zodiac line, it is believed that the final run of Prefects were painted with whatever paint was available. Said to subsequently have been in stock with the supplying dealership, the Ford was finally road registered in October 1953.

Restored in the 1990s with several accompanying photographs of the restoration work completed, the Prefect was retained in the previous custodianship from 2005 until purchase by the vendor in 2019. Converted to 12-volt at some stage, ‘TPA 719’ is offered with a history file which includes the aforementioned restoration photos, show board with numerous rally plaques, several previous invoices; several tax discs, MOT certificates dating back to 1996 and a current V5C document.
