Would you believe if I told you the project file with this track started as a Picross inspired track? The past few months I've been a bit stuck about what to write for my tracks. It felt like I was writing the same track over and over again for a few months. And one day I tried writing my own version of a Picross track as I've been investing A LOT of time into Picross haha. I wasn't really happy with how it sounded, and played something a bit darker. I actually really like the sound of it, and decided to flesh it out. I started with the opening chord pattern, then heard the octave ostinato figure, and it started coming together. I was thinking about how this could fit in the newest Famicom Detective Club game, Emio- The Smiling Man. The track was originally 40 seconds, and then I thought it would be cool to add some hi-hat like you hear in the Pirate's Grotto in Paper Mario and the Thousand Year Door.
I've honestly never written anything like this before, and I'm very proud of how it turned out for my first attempt. The track is much more minimalist than I typically write and relies pretty heavily on production techniques such as delay and panning. I wanted to evoke the feeling of constant move and not knowing where things are in your surroundings, which definitely speaks to the horror and suspenses elements you would hear in a detective song. I think one of my favorite things I did for this track was the bass drum towards the end of the track. I didn’t have any bass drum VSTs on hand, so I used a large kick drum from Superior Drummer 3, rendered and duplicated it, then transposed it down an octave, and repeated the process twice. It gave me 5 kick drums to place throughout the space and sound more like a concert bass drum. I think it worked really well!
As for the video, I really thought about it and spent a lot of time setting up the shots. I wanted to evoke the feeling of walking down a city street, late at night, with one lone street light as your source of life. So I actually set up a little light above the piano so it looked like a street lamp above me. I had a lot of fun filming something darker than usual, especially, the keyframed vignette in the beginning. I knew the video needed something more, and opted to use some purple smoke, since it reminded me a lot of the visuals I saw in Emio's trailers. I had so much fun with this track and I'm so glad it helped get me out of my writing funk.
Hope you enjoy my Emio Inspired track, Smiling Shadows ~
