Detailed Summary of William Shakespeare's Twelfth Night, a romantic comedy that was produced in 1601 to celebrate the festival of Twelfth night. The other title of this play was 'What Will You?' The source of this play was Barnabe Riche’s story of Apollonius and Silla from the book Riche His Farewell to Military Profession that was published in 1581. Another source is the Italian Comedy GI ingannati which was published anonymously in 1531.
Ben Jonson also wrote a play for the celebrations of Twelfth Night which was staged on 6th January 1605, its title was The Masque of Blackness. The original title of Ben Jonson's play was Twelfth Night's Revels which was later changed to The Masque of Blackness.
In 1930, British novelist W. Somerset Maugham published his novel Cake and Ale, subtitled The Skeleton in the Cupboard. Maugham mentioned that he chose the title Cake and Ale from the dialogue between Sir Toby Belch and Malvolio in Shakespeare’s Twelfth Night. Toby Belch says to Malvolio, “Dost thou think, because thou art virtuous, there shall be no more cakes and ale?”
The main characters of Twelfth Night are twin brother and sister Sebastian and Viola. After being parted away due to shipwreck, Viola disguises as a young boy Cesario to earn a living as the page boy of Duke Orsino who loves a wealthy lady Olivia. Other characters are Olivia's drunkard uncle Sir Toby Belch, his friend Sir Andrew Agucheek, Jester Feste who is the clown of Duke Orsino, Malvolio, servant of Olivia, Maria, gentlewoman and carer of Olivia and Antonio, a sea captain and friend of Sebastian.
