On Friday, 27 Dec 2024, at 13h04, CoCT Strand lifeguards saved a 14-year-old boy and assisted two friends trapped in a rip current at Strand Beach. NSRI Beach Safety Camera operator Lezhae Snyders spotted the emergency and alerted the lifeguards, who responded within minutes. Lifeguards Caydon Neuman, Jubilee van Jaarsveld (with Torpedo Buoys), and Sthembela Khawula (on a rescue board) floated the trio to safety. Their quick action, combined with NSRI monitoring, averted a tragic outcome.

To date, the NSRI beach cameras are strategically placed at beaches that have dangerous RIP currents. They are in the following areas in the Western Cape, Strand Beach, Blouberg Beach, Herolds Bay (Garden Route area), and Buffels Bay.
