After WWII, the P-51 was renamed "The F-51" by the USAF. Some of them ramined in service all the way into the Vietnam War in the late 60's, flying CAS and RECON missions in Vietnam and Cambodia.

Some F-51's were used as Sandys in Vietnam, providing Helicoper escort for rescuing downed US pilots. The A-1 Skyraider was the most famous plane in this role and was more widely used but the F-51 played its part.
