On November 12 1944, the Dambusters and No.9 squadron undertook Operation Catechism, a daring mission to finally sink the formidable German battleship Tirpitz. Despite previous failed attempts, the RAF took off with the new Tallboy bombs and launched for their unprecedented 3,400-mile mission. The Tirpitz was heavily defended, but they managed to score critical hits, causing the ship to capsize and sink. The sinking of the Tirpitz resulted in the loss of around 1000 German Navy men. The British suffered no casualties.
