The convoys helped sustain Soviet resistance against Nazi Germany, providing essential supplies and military aid. They faced extreme weather conditions, including temperatures as low as minus 30°C, towering seas, and constant darkness. The routes were fraught with dangers from German U-boats and aircraft, as well as harsh ice conditions, resulting in the loss of around 3,000 sailors.
