Benjamin Britten's "Young Person's Guide to the Orchestra" was written for a documentary educational film in 1945 that showed off the various sections of a symphony orchestra. The work was subtitled "Variations and Fugue on a Theme of Purcell" which took a melody from the baroque composer's "Abdelazer" Suite. Leopold Stokowski was the first great international maestro to appear at the Proms and his debut concert, with the BBC Symphony on 23 July 1963, included the Britten work to mark the composer's 50th birthday.

It can be heard again, in newly remastered sound, in a 6CD 'BBC Legends' Box that features many other Proms performances conducted by Stokowski, including a stunning Mahler "Resurrection" Symphony. Full details of the set can be found by clicking this link ...
