Temirkanov conducts the 'Pas de deux' from Tchaikovsky's "Nutcracker" Ballet
Yuri Temirkanov and the St. Petersburg Philharmonic made two appearances at the BBC Proms during the 1992 season and the second of their concerts ended with three encores. The major work on the programme was Tchaikovsky's "Manfred" Symphony, somewhat abridged and rearranged, and their first encore came from his 'Nutcracker' Ballet. The concert was filmed by BBC Television and the director and sound engineer evidently decided that the Tchaikovsky encore was some kind of Concerto for Harp, as it occupied the screen more than any other instrument and sounded louder than the entire string section! Note: Yuri Temirkanov died in St. Petersburg on 2 November 2023 at the age of 84.
