Now considered one of the band's signature tunes, this started off as one of several to be given the placeholder name of Bad Salad - a play on "sad ballad" that Jeff Lynne would use for many of his slower, more reflective songs. Rather than just use the recording of a dial tone, captured during a transatlantic call to then-girlfriend Sandi Kapelson, he instructed keyboardist Richard Tandy to recreate this sound on a Minimoog, with EQ added to his voice as the stereo master tape was being cut to lacquer. Because of a delay in getting safety copies out to some pressing plants, early singles had engineers either try their best to replicate the effect or not bother at all, leading to interesting collectors' pieces. Quickly becoming a concert staple, the live arrangement retains a short instrumental bridge that was spliced out of the studio version late into production.
