Nissl-staining is a widely used method to study morphology and pathology of neural tissue. After standard immunocytochemistry, the Nissl-staining labels only the nucleus of neurons and the characteristic staining of the neuronal perikarya is absent or very weak.
The pattern of coloration with Nissl stains once was used to classify neurons For various reasons, this practice has largely ceased, but specific neuronal types do manifest characteristic types of Nissl bodies.

Golgi-Cox staining is a useful method for visualizing the dendritic branching pattern and dendritic spines, which allows us to study the relationship between behavioral phenotype and morphological changes of neurons.
Bielschowsky's silver stain is a very useful tool to detect nerve fibers. It can be used to stain axons, neurofibrils and senile plaques in the central nervous system. This method is easy to perform and is routinely used in the study of Alzheimer's disease together with antibody staining.
