How to Use Resume Keywords

Watch today's video for tips on how to use resume keywords. In case you don't know, when an employer posts an ad for a job, they can potentially get thousands of resumes for that one ad - especially in today's job market.

So, one of the most efficient ways for them to review the resumes of eligible applicants is to dump all of those resumes into a database. Then, the human resources manager will enter search terms that are relevant to the job to bring up all the resumes that match.

Your resume won't come up in the search results unless you know how to use resume keywords. Here's how to do it:

1. Scan through job ads that are relevant to your skills and pick out keywords or key phrases that match your skill set.

2. Include those keywords and key phrases in a separate section on your resume in bullet form. You can title the section "core competencies" or "key attributes" or something similar.

3. Use those keywords and phrases again throughout your resume when you go on to write about your work experience.

Here are some examples:

For a sales representative: territory planning, cold calling, sales presentations

For an administrative assistant: travel planning, call screening, preparing correspondence

For a computer programmer: client/server applications, systems analysis, database programming

So, when updating your resume for your job search, make sure you put your knowledge on how to use resume keywords to good use.

How do I know this stuff? I spent many years working as an employment agent and then as a professional resume writer in my own business.

I don't write resumes any longer because I found a business that's far more appealing and with a far greater income potential.
