Cholesterol is a waxy, fat-like substance that is found in all cells of the body. It is produced by the liver and is also obtained from certain foods, such as meat, dairy products, and eggs.

Cholesterol is essential for many bodily functions, such as the production of hormones, vitamin D, and bile acids. However, high levels of cholesterol in the blood can increase the risk of developing heart disease and stroke.

Cholesterol is carried through the bloodstream by lipoproteins, which come in two main types: low-density lipoprotein (LDL) and high-density lipoprotein (HDL). LDL is often called “bad” cholesterol because high levels of it can lead to a buildup of plaque in the arteries, while HDL is often called “good” cholesterol because it helps remove excess cholesterol from the blood.

A healthy diet and regular exercise can help keep cholesterol levels in check.
