The Suleymaniye Mosque is an architectural master peace of Istanbul, designed by the famous Architect Mimar, Sinan. This was made in honour of Sultan Süleyman the Magnificent. The Establishment of the mosque started, on 1550, and took almost 8 years to finish.
There is a forecourt at the entrance of the mosque like all other Imperial mosques of Istanbul. The mosque has four Minarets at the four corners of the courtyard symbolising the mosque endowed by a sultan. The four minarets have in total of ten balconies as Süleyman was the 10th Ottoman Sultan.
The history of Süleymaniye hasn’t always been easy. The mosque was ravaged by fire in 1660 and the dome partially collapsed by earthquake on 1766. On the other hand, another fire ignited during world war 1 when the courtyard was used as a weapons depot. Final the mosque was fully restored on 1956.
The mosque is a vast square in shape form inside, and main dome is around 53 meters high. There are stained glass windows and blue Iznik tile-work on the Qiblah wall. The interior always feels cool because of the air flow system which was incorporated in the initial design of the Mosque.
The columns of the mosque are ingeniously incorporated into the walls and nicely masked. The interior decoration is very minimal but yet very pleasing. Mosque has natural lights defusing inside through 200 stained-glass windows.
