Text messaging should be one method in teachers’ overall comprehensive plans for connecting with parents and increasing involvement in education (Pakter & Chen, 2013). Sending e-mails out as text messages is an easy and effective way to ensure that parents stay involved in their student’s education. This tutorial shows educators how to utilize the “Contacts” section of G-mail to create text messaging groups to keep your parents and students engaged.
Since the inception of the No Child Left Behind Act in 2001, there has been a national mandate that schools must appropriate funds towards parent involvement in education (McDonald et al., 2006). G-mail provides teachers with tools to create infrastructure for effective family engagement and efficient communication among all members of the educational community (Robertson, 2013). Using the free resources that G-mail provides, educators can create e-mail and text messaging groups that allow them to generate mass communications with the click of a few buttons. Parental involvement is a critical piece of education because creating a multifamily space for social engagement and community collaboration outside of the classroom has a positive effect on academic performance (McDonald et al., 2006). The following video tutorials walk instructors through the process of creating infrastructure for communication using G-mail and its “Contacts” features.
