Young Virendra Singh has made a U-turn. Growing up in a Garhwali village, Viru walked 15 Km through the Jabarkhet forest to go to school and college. To him, its sights and sounds were a familiar, unremarkable blur of trees and birds - until it began to dwindle before his eyes. From indiscriminate logging to irresponsible tourism, human encroachment took its toll. Viru, like his contemporaries, had set out to find an urban future. But fate, forest and Dr. Sejal Vohra stopped him in his tracks.
His indifference collided with her idealism in remarkable ways. He found himself captivated by the little things, from woodpeckers to ladybugs to rhododendrons. Soon, he was roping more disillusioned youngsters into the conservation effort, encouraging them to see the familiar with new eyes.
Their quest to restore the forest’s green cover and its wildlife ended up revitalizing the local economy, reversing urban migration and rejuvenating the entire community, marking Jabarkhet as a veritable forest of U-turns.
