*Biggest* Firewood Challenge of the year!
Today I tackle my biggest firewood challenge this year!
This very large dead Yellow Box (Eucalyptus Melliodora) - blew down about 3 months ago. These things are super hard, super gnarly and super heavy, so its a challenge to cut and split. I added a new 24" bar and chain to the Shindaiwa 600sx to tackle the 25+ inch girth of this tree, which widens to 30 inches at the butt.
It's thick fibrous bark is hard on a chainsaw chain as it usually holds dust and dirt, and also adds to the weight. Each round is approx 70kg or 150lb, so you certainly have to work to get firewood from this species.
Yellow box is selling for $180 per cubic meter (m3)where I live, There are 3.7 m3 in a full cord, so you do the maths!

Once cut, the rounds are so heavy I had to bring the splitter to the wood and split them into manageable pieces running the slitter in its vertical mode.
I hit dirt cutting the third round so had to stop and sharpen (if you look closely you will see it)
After that I can split them down to size in the regular horizontal mode.
Dry and ready to burn, this makes a great start to winter 2021's firewood needs.
