Linear Correlation
(Correlation Analysis - Association between two variables)
Meaning:
In a bi-variate distribution, we may be interested to find if there is any relationship between the two variables under study. The correlation is a statistical tool which studies the relationship between two variables and correlation analysis involves various methods an techniques used for studying and measuring the extent of the relationship between the two variables.
“Correlation is an analysis of the co-variation between two or more variables.”
TWO VARIABLES ARE SAID TO BE CORRELATED IF THE CHANGE IN ONE VARIABLE RESULTS IN A CORRESPONDING CHANGE IN THE OTHER VARIABLE.
When we analyse statistical data with two or more variables, we believe that there is a change in the value of a variable because of the change in the value of the other variable. In this way we believe that both the variables influence each other at the same time. Both are independent as well as dependent on each other at the same time.
If we have two variables, say 'x' and 'y', there is a change in the value of 'y' because of change in the value of 'x' and at the same time the change in the value of 'x' is because of the change in the value of 'y'. Thus, both influence each other at the same time.
