This video shows how interviewees should not respond to interviews in Canada. When an employer asks an interviewee questions, the employer expects to hear complete and direct answers to assess whether the interviewee has the knowledge, skills and experiences to be qualified.
Discussion Questions:
1. The job applicant in this situation responded well to the first questions that asked how he would work in a time constrained job. He made the link between his last job in a fast food restaurant an and both his time management skills and understanding of Canadian culture. Can you think of a skill you learned in a past situation that you could apply to a new job?
2. There is a lot of government and recruiter specific vocabulary in this video clip. Do you know how to explain these terms?
regulatory contraints
your "direct report"
our "structured interview process"
asking "behavioural questions"
3. What did you notice about a job interview in government from this video clip?
4. One question asked about a conflict at work and how the job applicant handled it. What was wrong with his answer according to Canadian expectations? What should he have done differently?
5. It seemed the applicant was avoiding the question aboutr how he would work with regulatory constraints. Perhaps he didn't understand what that term meant. What should you do in an interview if you are asked something you don't understand?
6. When the applicant said he would be happy to get the job because it was a "start" and then asked right away what the salary was, this was a problem for the recruiting team. Why do you think they were not happy with that response? What should he have said differently when they asked him how he would handle a job with a lot of repetition?
