What is the Air and Space Forces of Russia | VCS
On August 1, a new type of Armed Forces - Air and Space Forces (VCS) - appeared in Russia. They united under one single head the Air Force and the Air and Space Defense Force. The commander-in-chief of the Air Force Viktor Bondarev announced the formation of this new type of troops for the first time back in July 2014, and now he headed the VKS. Why was this path chosen, what is the current state of affairs and prospects?
Let's start with the fact that in recent years, the military has increasingly "mastered" near space. And, first of all, this applies to anti-aircraft and anti-missile defense systems. Zaatmosferny interception of targets becomes the main way of development of air defense / missile defense systems. The Russian S-400 surface-to-air missile system with the new 40N6E missile will be able to hit targets at altitudes of more than 100 km, and the C-500 system, which is under development, will have to be able to knock down satellites in low orbits at all - as it does the American Aegis missile defense system.
No less "fashionable" is the theme of hypersonic cruise missiles and, to a lesser extent, aircraft. Russia, China and the United States are developing such weapons - for example, cruise missiles (KR) of this type will be able to fly at speeds of about
6000-12000 km / h, which exceeds the speed of existing cruise missiles by 2-3 times. Already, prospective air defense and missile defense systems are laying the groundwork for combating such targets.
The development of hypersonic weapons will lead to the fact that there will be very little time to respond to the enemy's attack. The same can lead to the destruction of the Treaty on medium and short-range missiles (INF) and the deployment of a large number of such missiles in Europe. In such conditions, the maximum integration of all reconnaissance, defense and retaliatory systems is important. In this vein, the association of the Air Force and the Air Space Defense Troops is logical. For example, a number of missiles of one type or another are launched across Russia. The first launch should detect early warning satellites about a missile attack, then radars of the same system, and then targets should be hit "on the ground" by air defense and missile defense forces, in parallel, a retaliatory strike must be struck, including by the forces of the Air Force.
