Why France is Knocking on the Doors of BRICS - France’s Macron Asks For Invitation To Upcoming BRICS Summit in South Africa. According to several French media sources (sabc news, cnn, wion, firstpost, cnn, etc.), French President Emmanuel Macron has requested an invitation to the BRICS Summit in August 2023 from South African President Cyril Ramaphosa. This news has not been confirmed by the Élysée Palace yet, and the spokesperson for the South African president claimed to be unaware of Macron's request. But it has caused quite a stir in the field of public opinion, as this is the first time that a leader of the G7 developed countries has attempted to attend a BRICS conference, especially against the background of the Russia-Ukraine conflict. Moscow has asked Paris to provide an explanation: Do they want to establish some kind of contact once again to show the activity of Paris, or is it some kind of Trojan horse?
Many political observers, who are familiar with Macron, believe the report is no great shock. To begin with, BRICS is becoming increasingly important. The BRICS countries cover 26% of the total land area on the planet and have a combined population of 3.24 billion people or more than 40% of the world's population. Not to mention that the BRICS five now account for 31.5 percent of world GDP, whereas the G7 accounts for 30 percent. Also, in the buildup to its next summit, BRICS has received membership bids from 19 nations, demonstrating its relevance in terms of growth, market, and prospects.
