The system of direct election of village mayors was introduced in Kazakhstan in 2021. The goal of this reform is to strengthen local self-government and increase the participation of the people in the state management processes. Since 2021, about 2.5 thousand village akims have been elected by direct voting in Kazakhstan. This change ensured that the voices of the villagers were heard in the formation of local authorities and contributed to the development of democratic processes.
