The Grateful Dead was based in San Francisco. The band formed in 1965 in Palo Alto, California, but soon moved to San Francisco, where they became closely associated with the city’s vibrant counterculture scene. They were a key part of the Haight-Ashbury neighborhood’s music scene during the 1960s, which was a hub for the hippie movement and psychedelic rock. Their unique blend of rock, folk, bluegrass, and psychedelic music made them one of the most iconic bands associated with San Francisco’s musical history.
