Elden Ring takes place in a fictional realm known as the "Lands Between". It was previously governed by the Goddess Marika alongside her consort, the "Elden Lord", from atop the giant "Erdtree" located in the center of the realm. She was also the host of the titular "Elden Ring", a magical force that is the physical embodiment of order. To ensure her eternal reign, Marika removed the "Rune of Death" from the Elden Ring, entrusting it to her bodyguard, Maliketh, for safekeeping, causing no one in the Lands Between to die. However, not all were equal under Marika's rule; such as the "Omens", who were born misformed and discriminated against, and humans known as "Tarnished", who are not immortal and were thus exiled from the Lands Between.
