Gap in PLM and CAD Software: Lack of Edge Connectivity
Recently, PTC released their earnings call, revealing an unsettling trend: the end-of-life stage for their IIoT investments, including Kepware, a PTC Technology and ThingWorx, a PTC Technology
This decision raises significant concerns about the strategic direction of their PLM (Product Lifecycle Management) and CAD (Computer-Aided Design) software offerings.
Why does this matter?
One of the most crucial aspects of product lifecycle management—from design to development to production—is the ability to gather real-time production data. This data is essential for providing feedback to improve future product generations. Without robust edge or IoT connectivity, how can a PLM system truly support this critical feedback loop?
Here are my key concerns:
1. Lack of Real-Time Feedback: Without edge connectivity, PLM systems miss out on real-time data from the production floor. This data is vital for making informed decisions and continuous improvements.
2 Disconnected Lifecycle: PLM software is meant to manage the entire product lifecycle. Without IIoT, there is a significant disconnect between the design/development phase and the actual production environment.
3. Missed Opportunities for Innovation: Real-time data from production can drive innovation and enhance product quality. Ignoring IIoT means missing out on these opportunities.
I recently spoke with an executive who emphasized their focus on CAD and PLM over IIoT. 🤔
While their perspective may have merit, it still leaves me puzzled. Why would any forward-thinking company overlook the immense value that IIoT and edge connectivity bring to PLM systems? 🤨
