Indonesia Scraps Plan to Fight Dengue with “Good” Mosquitoes
Indonesia had planned to release 200 million genetically modified mosquitoes to combat dengue fever. These mosquitoes would carry bacteria that would lower their ability to transmit viruses to people. However, the plan has now been scrapped. Critics have raised ethical and health concerns related to the study that was first tested in 2011. However, researchers leading the study say that they have seen a considerable decrease in dengue cases in regions where the experiment was carried out and have vouched for the method.
