AWS + Liberty Mutual = 100M Trans./Run 🎯
Code is a liability. That's what Liberty Mutual, the world's 6th largest property insurance company told its developers. Why? Let me back up first.
In 2019, Liberty Mutual used AWS's serverless architecture to consolidate its diverse lines of business from around the globe into a centralized ledger application. Today, it processes over 100 million transactions in one run and it only costs them $60.
On top of it, they only use 4 AWS services. Which ones? Let's find out.
1. Using AWS Step Functions, Liberty Mutual created an event-driven workflow in which the data feeds from each line of business are transformed into a series of events. Step Functions is a visual workflow service that allows you to automate workflows across 220+ AWS services without maintaining code.
2. Step Functions integrate with AWS Lambda, which is a serverless, event-driven compute service that lets you run code for virtually any type of application without provisioning or managing servers. Did you know, you get 1 million requests for free per month with the AWS Lambda Free Tier?
3. To help deploy new applications quickly, Liberty Mutual created a software accelerator using the AWS CDK or Cloud Development Kit. Developers use the programming language TypeScript to create templates that can then be used to quickly build projects instead of writing code from scratch.
4. To connect applications using data, Liberty Mutual uses Amazon EventBridge which is a serverless event bus. It allows you to easily build loosely coupled, event-driven architectures to help you deploy new features faster. Did you know that there are over 90 AWS services available as event sources for EventBridge, including AWS Lambda, AWS Fargate, and Amazon S3?
In summary, by migrating to AWS's serverless architecture, Liberty Mutual decreased its application build time from 1 year to less than 3 months while reducing the computing costs significantly.
Or as Liberty Mutual will put it, you shouldn’t be writing code when you don’t need to!
