From Honey Birds to Army Ants: Two Tribes, One Sacred Bond with Insects | SLICE
Kisset, from the Nd’orobus tribe in southern Kenya, and Idrissou, a young boy from the Mofu tribe in northern Cameroon, both share a deep, ancient connection with insects, essential to their ways of life. The Nd’orobus are expert honey seekers, relying on the guidance of a special bird, the Euchostoi, to find honey during the flower season. Kisset and his father follow the bird through the bush, searching for honey that not only nourishes their family but is also a key ingredient in their traditional beer. In this delicate partnership, both human and bird are rewarded—the Nd’orobus collect their sweet prize, while the bird enjoys its share without the danger of bee stings.
Idrissou's relationship with insects takes a different form. In his Mofu tribe, insects are seen as protectors of ancient traditions, living harmoniously with humans—until termites invade his village, threatening the crops. Idrissou is given a vital mission: to fetch Jaglavak, a fierce red army ant known for its power. The villagers believe Jaglavak can drive out the termites and restore balance, demonstrating how insects, though small, play a massive role in their survival.
Through the stories of these two boys, we uncover the remarkable bond between humans and insects, from guiding birds to powerful ants, illustrating the intricate connections that sustain both nature and tradition.
