Otosclerosis 👂 is a progressive ear disorder characterized by abnormal bone remodeling in the middle ear, particularly affecting the stapes bone, one of the three tiny ossicles responsible for sound transmission to the inner ear.
In otosclerosis, the stapes becomes fixed due to abnormal bone growth, leading to conductive hearing loss as the ossicle can no longer vibrate freely.
This condition often begins in early adulthood and is more common in women, with potential links to genetic factors and hormonal changes, such as pregnancy. Patients typically experience gradual hearing loss, tinnitus (ringing in the ears), and sometimes vertigo.
Diagnosis is made through clinical evaluation, audiometry tests, and imaging studies like CT scans that can reveal the characteristic bone changes. Treatment options include hearing aids to amplify sound or surgical intervention, such as stapedectomy, where the immobilized stapes is replaced with a prosthetic device to restore hearing.
