During his long tenure, highly-respected umpire Hank O'Day showed the courage to make the right call no matter how unpopular. He followed a pitching career that included seven big league seasons by signing on as a fulltime National League umpire in 1897. Only two short stints as a major league manager interrupted his 30 seasons as an arbiter. In 1903, O'Day had the honor of calling balls and strikes in the first modern World Series, then earned nine more Fall Classic assignments. One memorable decision cancelled an apparent home-team victory in the famous "Merkle's Boner" game during the 1908 National League pennant race.
