At 1.4 million years old, Pingualuit Crater has experienced the Earth change in significant ways, many times over. Fast forward to present day, the crater—located in the barren tundra of Quebec’s Ungava Peninsula—is now considered a “climate change time machine” thanks to the undisturbed archive of information held in the sediment found at the bottom of its crystal-clear lake.

In this interview with Dr. Reinhard Pienitz, Professor in the Department of Geography and member of Centre d’études nordiques (CEN) at Université Laval, we explore this natural wonder and learn more about its history, and why it continues to fascinate scientists today.
