Despite the bad taste left in our mouths from the MLM industry which lingers after many years of struggling to make a buck back the old days when you had to draw circles on napkins in coffee shops and harrass people at the gas station or grocery store - the one thing my hubby and I are most grateful for is the positive impact personal development had on our relationship along the way.
You see, part of what is required if you are going to venture out to become an entrepreneur is working on yourself. So, you need to listen to audios of successful people and read success books.
Sadly, many people turn their noses up at personal development and think it's a load of crap.
I'm here to tell you that it's not a bunch of crap and the practice of reading success books and listening to successful people on audio had a lasting effect on me and my husband.
And, the personal development saved our marriage. Of that I am certain. Why? Because we started to think like successful people.
Early in our relationship I will admit that I had what's called an external locus of control which means you believe that everything is out of your control so you go about blaming other people whenever you feel miserable and take no responsiblity for your own actions or for how you feel.
After reading all those books and listening to successful people, I now have an internal locus of control. I now take full responsibility for how I feel and what's going on in my life and when it comes to my relationships - if there is conflict - I take half the responsibility (it takes two to tango afterall) whereas before - I never would.
This attitude that we've both developed has affected how we communicate with each other. We no longer play the blame game and pull temper tantrums - we resolve the problem together - as a team. All this is key if you're going to have a lasting marriage.
In contrast, our best friends marriage broke down about 18 months ago. And, it was heartbreaking to watch. Although I don't pretend to know everything that went on to spoil the relationship, I could definitely see where things might have been different.
And by the way, these are friends that laughed at us for getting involved in an MLM business all those years ago. That business didn't work out for us financially but, it sure had a wonderful impact on our level of happiness and our relationship.
You can't put a price on that.
