Athena Swan: transforming gender equality in higher education and research

This talk will explore how Advance HE’s Athena Swan Charter is used to support and transform gender, equality, diversity and inclusion (GEDI) within higher education and research around the world. Established in the UK in 2005 to encourage and recognise commitment to advancing the careers of women in science, technology, engineering, maths and medicine (STEMM) employment, the Charter framework is now used globally to address GEDI and intersectional equality challenges more broadly. Versions of the Charter have operated in the UK, Ireland, Cyprus, Australia, the US, Canada, India and Brazil. Each iteration has been locally contextualised while sharing key areas of commonality and comparability.
