The age of AAA games is nearly over. There is a chosen one to drive the game industry, but more later.

The past 30 years of the game industry has seen a boom of large-scale games with hundreds of people working behind the scenes to create some of the most memorable experiences we have ever seen. But these types of games, and the working conditions, are not sustainable and now early in 2024 we have seen a huge influx of layoffs. Over-hiring developers for the game has created a huge cost and the AAA shops can't keep all the employees on board.

So what is coming? I feel that story-driven games developed by hungry indie shops will rise up amidst the collapse of AAA games.

These indie developers can come from anywhere are the tools to develop games are cheaper if not free, the vast knowledge base
of shared information is free, and the competition is a community that all around supports each other.

Indie developers truly pour in passion that as a AAA developer you might have the same luxury. I think it was Thomas Brush
who said that AAA developers are more "feature tweakers" than game developers. What that means is that on the team of a hundred
other developers, you will be tasked with one primary feature, like the UI. For 2 years, you will modify or 'tweak' the settings
and display of that UI until the game is shipped. There isn't much opportunity for working outside your feature.

Indie developers are the jack of all trades. The teams need to be self-sufficient in a lot of cases and rely on everyone
pulling their weight and contributing to where work needs done. Whether this be programming, game art, sound design, or marketing
everyone has a role and job to do. This crossover work will pull that passion from the developer as they learn new things or try on different hats. And the developer and the player will appreciate that.

I don't think that AAA developers are going to go away, there is a huge money market for games and there will always be big name players, but this is only as long as they can find employees to work in the current working conditions. The giants will stumble and fall in the next couple of years as more and more indie developers get their games out and let the quality shine.
