Two jailed in Senegal for criticising Prime Minister on gay rights - In an interesting development that highlights the turbulent intersection of politics, culture, and LGBTQ rights, two men in Senegal have been jailed for accusing the new Prime Minister Ousmane Sonko of supporting homosexuality. Activists Bah Diakhate and Imam Cheikh Ahmed Tidiane Ndao were sentenced to three months in prison and fined 100,000 CFA francs or the equivalent of $165 each for "spreading false news."
This controversy began to brew in mid-May when Jean-Luc Mélenchon, a far-left French politician, visited Dakar and spoke at a student forum at Cheikh Anta Diop University. Mélenchon boldly expressed his support for same-sex marriages, a stance that sharply contrasted with Senegal's conservative values. His comments were met with boos from the audience, underscoring the deep-seated opposition to homosexuality in the predominantly Muslim nation, where homosexual acts are illegal and punishable by up to five years in prison. Activist Diakhate and Imam Ndao were incensed by Prime Minister Sonko's decision to allow Mélenchon a platform to voice his views. They took to social media, posting a video that accused Sonko of tolerating homosexuality, a grave charge in a country where LGBTQ rights remain a highly sensitive and polarizing issue. Their arrest followed swiftly, leading to their trial and subsequent sentencing.
