The ONE Thing You Need to Succeed
There’s one thing a person needs to succeed in building their own business. More than capital, more than experience, more than time…what you need is patience. When I started my business as a side-hustle to my job in a cheese factory, I told myself I’d go full-time as a filmmaker in five years. It took me three. Why? It might seem counterintuitive, but it’s because I WAS patient. Patient with myself and the number of clients I was pulling in at the beginning – about one per month to start with at $250 a pop. But being patient didn’t mean sitting on my laurels and waiting for jobs to arrive. I had, as Gary Vee calls it, macro patience and micro speed. I knew that long-term my business would take off, but in the short term I had to work every day like the business’s success and failure depended upon it. Did I want it to pop off and let me go full-time right away? Of course. But, every day that I was on my feet for 12 hours putting cheese into a box, I knew that the commercial jobs would keep flowing in the harder I worked on my side hustle when I clocked out from the day job. So, I did. I really didn’t take a day off for almost three years.
I still have huge goals for the business and for my career as a filmmaker, but every time I achieve one of those goals, I set a new one just a little bit higher, because I know that the speed at which I work on a day-to-day basis and the long-term patience I apply to my dreams will create the perfect cocktail of achievement and success. It’s not a waiting game, though – it’s an action game. Move swiftly in the direction of your dreams but know that every stone you turn over will be one closer to achieving your goals.
So, it doesn’t matter what your goal is – whether it’s being a full-time YouTuber, getting the dream job at a killer startup, finding the love of your life or buying a house – execute patience with the process – not to mention kindness to yourself as you grow – and amazing things will happen. I have NO DOUBTS about that.
