Franco Simongini intervista De Chirico a Venezia.
“È domenica, è inverno/ è mattina…/ Ho finito ieri il mio quadro…/ La gente va in chiesa…/ Chi è andato a caccia, / chi a pesca…/ il lavoro riprende/ domani, ma la pioggia / lenta scende e dolcemente / predica / che tutto è vano”. Questa bella e malinconica poesia che si chiude sulle famose parole dell’Ecclesiaste, Giorgio de Chirico la dedicò a Franco Simongini (1) il 6 dicembre 1971, scrivendola in calce ad un disegno che rappresenta un suo Autoritratto in costume del Seicento, dal noto dipinto del 1947 dallo stesso titolo, molto caro all’artista, tanto che lo considerava “una delle migliori pitture che io abbia eseguito” (Memorie della mia vita), oggi conservato nelle collezioni della Galleria Nazionale d’Arte Moderna.
"It's Sunday, it's winter / it's the morning ... / I finished my painting yesterday ... / People go to church ... / Who went hunting, / who fishing ... / work resumes / tomorrow, but the rain/slow descends and gently / preaches / that all is in vain ”. Giorgio de Chirico dedicated this beautiful and melancholic poem, which closes on the famous words of Ecclesiastes, to Franco Simongini (1) on 6 December 1971, writing it at the bottom of a drawing that represents his self-portrait in costume from the seventeenth century, from the well-known painting from 1947 with the same title, very dear to the artist, so much so that he considered it "one of the best paintings I have done" (Memoirs of my life), now preserved in the collections of the National Gallery of Modern Art.
