This camera was made by the Krasnogorsk Mechanical Factory (KMZ) (Krasnogorsk Mekanicheski Zavod); located in a suburb of Moscow it was one of the largest camera factories in Russia. The "Quartz M", was one of the Quartz series of 8mm cine cameras made by KMZ in the 1960s and 1970s. The Curator of Cimematography at NMPFT suggests a production date of mid to late 1960s. The camera takes standard 8mm film and runs by clockwork.

Standard 8 mm film, also known as Regular 8 mm film, Double 8 mm film, Double Regular 8 mm film, or simply as Standard-8 or Regular-8, is a film format originally developed by the Eastman Kodak company and released onto the market in 1932.
