Canada is introducing a two-year cap on international student permits starting in 2024 to manage growth in international student numbers. This is aimed at mitigating issues such as housing shortages and job scarcity. As part of this initiative, applicants must provide a provincial attestation with their study permit application effective from September 1 of this year.
Another significant change is that postgraduate work permits will no longer be available for students attending public or private institution models, affecting the work opportunities for graduates.
"Canada is implementing a temporary cap on international student permits to ensure stability in housing and job markets."

The Canadian government has ceased issuing spousal open work permits for the spouses of international students enrolled in colleges. While students in universities can still bring their spouses, those in colleges are now restricted from doing so. This amendment influences family dynamics for aspiring international students.
For single students, the rules are less restrictive; they can choose to study in colleges or universities without the complications that arise from dependent visas.
"If you are studying in colleges, you cannot bring your spouse or children along with you."

A new requirement mandates that students applying for study permits for colleges must obtain a provincial attestation letter. This letter demonstrates the college's alignment with provincial education regulations and can typically be obtained upon receiving a letter of acceptance from the college.
This step emphasizes the collaboration between colleges and provinces to validate international students' eligibility for study permits.
"You need to get a provincial attestation letter from the province where your college is located."

Recent changes limit eligibility for postgraduate work permits only to those who complete in-demand courses offered by specific colleges. Not every course or college will facilitate obtaining a postgraduate work permit, thus necessitating prudent course selection by students.
Students should verify whether their desired course is on the province’s in-demand list, ensuring their studies will meet future job market needs.
"Now, only those courses considered in demand by the province will qualify for a postgraduate work permit."

Full-time work for students on study permits is no longer allowed; instead, the new regulation permits only 24 hours of work per week. However, students engaged in co-op programs can work full-time without restrictions, providing an avenue for practical experience during their studies.
Prospective international students should consider these work regulations while planning their studies in Canada.
"Students are now allowed to work only 24 hours per week if they are on a study visa, except during co-op placements."
