Hamid Dabashi gives keynote speech at UBC conference on Iranian democracy
Hamid Dabashi kicked off the March 1, 2013 conference, Challenge of Democratization from Within: Rethinking Iran's Green Movement and the Arab Spring, with his keynote speech.
On the second anniversary of the Arab Spring and three years after the rise of Iran's Green Movement, this conference brought together a number of renowned experts on the Middle East to examine the problems and future prospects of democratization from within. Topics included the crisis in Syria, the effects of foreign intervention on these movements, the challenge of democratic transition in Egypt, Iran and more.
Dabashi, the Cecil H. and Ida Green Visiting Professor at Green College, opened the conference with a keynote address entitled Opera Aperta: Fragmented Archives, Impermanent Allegories, and Open-Ended Revolutions. Biography: Hamid Dabashi is the Hagop Kevorkian Professor of Iranian Studies and Comparative Literature at Columbia University, New York. He has taught and delivered lectures in many North and Latin American, European, Arab, and Iranian universities, is a founding member of the Institute for Comparative Literature and Society, as well as a founding member of the Center for Palestine Studies at Columbia University. He has written 25 books, edited four, and contributed chapters to many more. He is also the author of over 100 essays, articles and book reviews in major scholarly and peer reviewed journals on subjects ranging from Iranian Studies, medieval and modern Islam, comparative literature, world cinema, and the philosophy of art (trans-aesthetics).
