CINCINNATI (Liz Bonis) - Doctors at the CDC said women may not knowingly put babies at risk due to alcohol use; they are quite often just still just drinking alcohol and don't realize they are in the early stages of a pregnancy.

The strong statement from the CDC asked women to consider birth control if they drink booze and could become pregnant or not to drink alcohol at all if they are trying to have a baby. They made the recommendation because they said 1 in 20 babies was now born with some kind of lasting physical , behavioral or intellectual problem due to alcohol. They call the problems fetal alcohol spectrum disorders.

Without realizing it the CDC estimated women between the ages of 15 and 44 were at risk of exposing a developing fetus to alcohol because they drink, were sexually active and could become pregnant. They found even when women were actively trying to get pregnant, three in four continued drinking alcohol; putting too many babies at risk for serious health problems.

Sister Tricia Cruise is part of the team in Cincinnati that runs a group called Healthy Moms and Babes. She said their organization provides free support for women who need it while pregnant and the no alcohol message while pregnant was often a struggle for women who were struggling finding the love and support that they needed.

"If they can't love and take care of themselves there's no way they are going to able to take care of their children. And for me, coming from my background, there is a direct correlation and their ability to take care of themselves and their children and the poverty rate which is number two for children in the city of Cinicnnati," said Sister Cruise.

She pointed out that it was a public health concern. It is a problem for everyone in the community when children were born with symptoms related to alcohol use in pregnancy and those symptoms will be life-long for babies. Sister Cruise echoed what experts from the Centers for Disease Control said as they released new concerns about alcohol use in women of child bearing age. Why take a chance a baby could be born with anything from brain to kidney damage due to alcohol and every family needs to know the risks.

It costs more than $5 billion a year for care of babies born to those who use alcohol in pregnancy. They said a lot of women know about eating right and taking prenatal vitamins if they want to have a healthy pregnancy but don't really think much about alcohol use.
